In Russia, there are about 50 species of crickets. These insects, related to grasshoppers, belong to the suborder Saltatoria of the order Orthoptera. Some of them are relatively large, e.g. field cricket is about 2.5 cm long. In southern regions it's chirping, attracting female crickets, may often be heard in early summer. The house cricket sometimes lives in houses. It is a much smaller (about 1.5 to 2 cm in length) nocturnal herbivorous creature. A male cricket makes a chirping sound by rubbing its wing cases together. A cricket is a good bait for fishing barbel, chub, common carp, ide and common rudd.
